The Spring Season for Oakland Youth Rowing at Jack London Aquatic Center in Oakland, CA has fun and competitive sculling programs for middle schoolers as well as competitive rowing for experienced and novice high school athletes. Programs will expand to include a full range of high school as our athletes grow.

Middle school athletes row in singles and double sculling boats , to learn to row or enhance their skills. There are beginner fun classes (2x a week) and a more advanced experienced team (4x a week).

High school athletes row in both sweep (1 oar) and sculling (2 oars) boats. There is a novice squad and and experienced (varsity).

We offer excellent athletic training while working to empower our athletes through independence, self-confidence, improved communication skills, team work and community spirit.  All programs focus on learning proper technique, physical conditioning and developing training tools for practice and competition.

The team began in September 2011, and is currently focused on younger rowers - freshman in high school and younger. Our equipment and coaching is dedicated to advancing and teaching you to row properly and skillfully. We will build our team in future years around you.  Athletes who start now will become our experienced juniors and seniors in coming years as the team grows to include a full high school varsity squad.

MIDDLE SCHOOLERS spend most of their time sculling. Beginners, in the 6th-8th grade, learn  in a relaxed, fun environment where they can build skills and enjoy the Estuary! Experienced rowers (from our program or others) continue to learn new skills and are introduced to the fun of racing.

Our NOVICE RACING team is great for experienced athletes looking for an exciting new sport or students looking to try a competitive team for the first time! Most rowers have historically picked up the sport in their first year of high school, so there is a great level playing field. We offer competitive racing teams where athletes learn and develop their skills through practice and competition against other teams.

We have a small group of experienced high school rowers. Please contact Will if interested in joining.

Oakland Youth Rowing programs and teams are open to everyone, and have the lowest fees and highest coaches/athlete ratio in the Bay Area. If the fees are still a barrier we will work with you to create a plan to make it work; we want everyone to row.

WHO JOINS OAKLAND YOUTH ROWING?

People from all athletic backgrounds pick up rowing during middle school and high school.  Top rowers can be athletes who have also found great success in other sports or athletes who never broke a sweat until picking up an oar!  Since most rowers & coxswains start the sport in high school, there's a great level playing field for anyone who wants to give it a try!

Some of the more common reasons people decide to start rowing are...

...trying a new challenge

...meeting people and forming strong friendships with teammates

...getting in excellent shape while learning a fun, exciting new skill

...the opportunity to compete against other high school athletes at the top levels of the sport
